In 2006 I started a blog called MusicIsFreeNow.org. At the time I was heavily involved in running and promoting The Lisps which meant interacting a lot with music blogs. I had a lot of thoughts about music and since I was already wading around in that world I thought I would start my own platform separate from The Lisps. I called it Music Is Free Now because at the time there was so much hysteria around the breakdown of the economic models within the music industry, but also because I wanted to connect music with freedom more generally. Music is free. Music makes us free. Music is freedom. I also saw a connection between the dissolution of the music industry as we knew it, and increased freedom for musicians and audiences.

Over the years I used the blog to promote my work and to reflect on the music/politics/theory that was moving me. After 2015 I only posted occasionally. But here are some of my favorite articles from the site:

I’ve decided to keep the site online as a relic of my early journey, dead links and all. Maybe one day I’ll take it down, but for now I think I’ll let it slowly decompose into text.
